Mission Trip Opportunity
Sunday June 25th 2017 through Saturday July 1st 2017
to McDowell County, West Virginia
Open to anyone 16 years or older - cost is $200 per person. Please let Mother Mary+ know if you are interested in going by 28 February 2017 as the group is limited to 12 people and is filling up fast.
Some information on the project: Welch, a town in one of the poorest sections of Appalachia has suffered job losses as the coal industry abandons the areas mines, 72% of school age children live in households without gainful employment; the county wide unemployment rate is 40%; the area endures massive flooding annually; and leads the nation in deaths from prescription drug overdose.
Volunteers will work on homes pre-selected by County Agencies as representing those in the most profound need. Master carpenters, plumbers and electricians will be part of the group.
This trip is being organized by Mike Watson, a Postulant for Holy Orders in the Diocese of NY and under the auspices of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Mt. Kisco where Mike is assigned at the moment. Approximately five Episcopal Churches in our immediate area are collaborating on this project.
Note: If you are already planning on going on a Mission Trip through the ASP at Pleasantville Presbyterian Church, please let Mother Mary know so we can help raise funds for both of these worthwhile trips at the same time.
