The Episcopal Service of Renaming
Affirming Identity. Honoring Sacred Story.
In the Episcopal Church, we believe that God calls each of us by name and knows us deeply and truly. As people grow, change, and more fully understand themselves, they may come to claim a new name—one that better reflects their identity, their journey, or the person God created them to be.
The Service of Renaming is a sacred and pastoral rite in which an individual publicly affirms their new name within the context of prayer and worship. Grounded in the baptismal covenant, this service recognizes that we are all beloved children of God, continually being formed and re-formed by grace.
Who Might Seek a Renaming Service?
This service is available to anyone seeking to mark a new name as a part of their spiritual life. This may include:
- A transgender or nonbinary person claiming a name that reflects their true identity
- A survivor of trauma or abuse choosing a name that honors healing and new life
- A person reclaiming a birth name, cultural name, or chosen name as an act of restoration
- Anyone marking a significant life transition with a name that expresses their calling or transformation
What Happens in the Service?
The Service of Renaming may include:
- Readings from Scripture and the Book of Common Prayer
- Prayers for healing, courage, and blessing
- A public declaration of the new name
- A celebratory anointing or blessing by the priest
- Support and affirmation from the gathered community
It can be held during a Sunday service or as a more intimate gathering with family and friends, depending on your preference.
A Sacred Act of Belonging
To be known and called by name is to be recognized as whole, as beloved, as belonging. If you are discerning a new name and wish to mark that moment in the life of the church, we are here to walk with you in love and in faith.
